Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences has been established under the State Legislature Act in 1983 and is named after Sanjay Gandhi.It was created by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a centre of excellence for providing medical care, education and research of the highest order. The institute is situated in a 550 acres (2.2 square kilometres) campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km from the main city. Lucknow is located about 500km east of New Delhi and is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is famous for its Nawabi culture, Mughlai cuisine and intricate chikan work, a form of fine embroidery.
The Institute provides postgraduate training to medical and nonmedical professionals. The training programmes lead to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowships, postdoctoral certificate Programmes in various disciplines. In addition, it offers senior residency training programmes. B.Sc. Nursing course and BSc / MSc paramedical technology Programmes in allied sciences are offered by the College of Medical Technology.The Institute is an autonomous body and awards degrees which are recognised by the Medical Council of India. The Institute functions as a State University and is member of the Association of Indian Universities and is recognised by University Grants Commission.

28/08/2025: A Pre-Conference Workshop focused on the prevention of stillbirths through the empowerment of healthcare workers was organized
The event featured the gracious presence of Deputy Chief Minister Shri Brajesh Pathak, SGPGIMS Director Padmashri Professor R.K. Dhiman, CMO Dr. N.B Singh, and Organising Chairperson Dr. Mandakini Pradhan, HOD, Maternal and Reproductive Health.
The primary aim of the workshop was to encourage learning and collaboration among healthcare workers. Approximately 600 ASHA workers attended the workshop.As the ASHA workers stand at the frontline and play an irreplaceable role in supporting families.
23/08/2025: Induction Program & Tablet Distribution Ceremony
The College of Nursing, organized a comprehensive Induction Program for the newly admitted B.Sc. and M.Sc. (1st Year) Nursing students (Batch 2025–26), and a Tablet Distribution Ceremony.
The event was graced by eminent dignitaries which included Padmashree Prof. R. K. Dhiman, Director, as Chief Guest, Col. Varun Bajpai (VSM), Executive Registrar, and Dr. Radha K., Professor & Principal.

The inauguration was graced by Padma Shri Prof.R.K.Dhiman, Director, SGPGIMS, Prof. Devendra Gupta, CMS, SGPGIMS,Dr. Sanjay Niranjan, Organising Chairperson, IAP NEOCON 2025 and Dr.Ruchira Gupta National Joint Secretary Liaison, IAP, along with other dignitaries.
18/08/2025: Pediatric Cardiac ICU Project at SGPGI
At a ceremony in CM house, chaired by the Hon’ble CM of UP Shri Yogi Adityantah Ji, the State Bank of India presented a cheque of ₹10 crore on 18th August to support the development of a state-of-the-art Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Dept. of CVTS, SGPGIMS. The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Govt. of UP and the Saloni Heart Foundation (SHF), USA. .
Prof RK Dhiman, Director of SGPGIMS, thanked SBI and SHF for their partnership and reiterated the institute’s mission to provide hope and healing for children with congenital heart disease.
15/08/2025: SGPGIMS celebrated 79th Independence Day on 15th August with great enthusiasm and zeal
As a tradition, Director SGPGI, Padma Shri Professor Radha Krishna Dhiman, hoisted the National Flag followed by National Anthem.Addressing on this occasion, he said that this is a day to celebrate country's independence, remember the sacrifices made to achieve it and reflect on India's progress since independence.
He said that a major achievement was the initiation of recruitment process in medical, paramedical and other cadres, which is being completed successfully. Tele ICU between PGI and 6 medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh is also a big achievement to provide treatment to critically ill patients in their city itself.
03/08/2025: Indian Organ Donation Day Celebrated at SGPGIMS- Debunking Myths and Highlighting Facts from a Religious Perspective
The SGPGIMS proudly hosted the Indian Organ Donation Day. The Dept. of Nephrology, Urology and Renal Transplantation in collaboration with Aalamban Associates Charitable trust and SOTTO, UP, started the Day with the WAKATHON from Apex Trauma Centre, SGPGIMS, with the slogan Angdaan Mahadaan.
This key initiative was inaugurated by Padma Shri Prof. R. K. Dhiman, Director, SGPGIMS, in the presence of senior faculty, transplant teams, and administrative leaders.
22-24 Aug 2025: SERCON 2025 Highlights Breakthroughs in Emergency Radiology Aiming to Transform Patient Care
The 12th Annual Conference of the Society for Emergency Radiology (SERCON 2025) organized by the dept. of Radio diagnosis.
The conference brought together over 500 delegates from across India and abroad under the theme “From Tears to Twists: Mastering GI and MSK Emergencies.”
The success of SERCON 2025 was attributed to the vision and guidance of Director Padmashree Dr. R. K. Dhiman, the leadership of Organising Chairperson Dr. Archna Gupta, and the meticulous planning of Organising Secretary Dr. Anuradha Singh
